Many beer festivals are exercises in arcane coolness, from attendee T-shirts endorsing obscure West Coast breweries to the beer itself. (“Did you try the sour beer aged in bourbon barrels, then aged in gin barrels at sea before entering rum barrels with the addition of rare Scandinavian mushrooms to be stored in a forest with a pack of wolves for six months? And it’s just 3.2 percent alcohol!”)

Josh Seago aims for the opposite.

Seago’s LouDog Events — named for a black lab named Lucy — runs close to 20 beer festivals per year in the Chicago area …
